Debunking viral cucumber nonstick pan hack from @food52

The creator debunks a viral kitchen hack that claims rubbing a cucumber on a pan makes it nonstick. He first critiques the original video for using a pre-existing nonstick pan, then tests the hack himself on a stainless steel pan to demonstrate its failure. Finally, he offers educational advice on using cast iron or carbon steel with oil as a proper alternative.

Transcript excerpt

That's a nonstick pan. That's why that worse. But fine. Let's see if this works. With a well made nonstick pan, you good put whatever you want on it. The egg's gonna slide around. But whatever. I'm game. I'll I'll try it. I'll try it. I'm gonna rub this on this stainless steel rank, pretty famously sticky material. There is like a slime for sure. It's just jiggling. Nope. I'll try to flip it. I mean, I did maybe make a little bit of a show of scraping this off of here, but this is what we were left with. Certainly, this was, like, not a nonstick. You can see underneath the egg mess, like, all of this stuff stuff. People are really just looking for a way to make their rank nonstick easy to clean without using a ton of fat and without harming themselves with microplastics, and I get it. Things like well seasoned cast iron and well seasoned carbon steel can accomplish this with just a little bit of oil. And a little bit of healthy fat with an egg is part of a complete breakfast if you ask this guy. Better, yeah, the cucumber hack doesn't work.
