Transcript excerpt

Never let them know your next move. The better cottontail. Probably. This rabbit eludes predators by leaping in zigzags to keep its movements unpredictable. It can even cover 10 feet in a single bound. But when looking for love, males are more direct. They'll court a female by charging straight at her. She may react by going high in the tier. Like other habitat dioramas in the museum, the Better Cottontail diorama depicts a real location at a specific point in time. This scene takes place at a pumpkin patch on an October day in Ithaca, New York. Did you know pumpkins are fruit? The flowering plants that bear pumpkins are native to The Americas and are part of the family that includes watermelon, cucumbers, and zucchini. As the weather gets colder, the Eastern Cottontail will go into hiding and not move much. Since it doesn't hibernate or turn white in winter, its gray brown coat stands out against snow.
