Creator tells show's origin story from @hooraemedia

Issa Rae recounts the origin story of her show's title, 'Insecure.' She explains that after she came up with the name, both her publicist and an HBO executive questioned it, with the executive suggesting more positive, empowering words like 'fierce' and 'flawless.' Rae then explains that this feedback highlighted the exact problem she wanted to address—the lack of opportunities for Black women to be portrayed as flawed and human on screen, moving beyond the 'strong Black woman' and 'Black girl magic' tropes.

Transcript excerpt

Had come up with the title because I remember I was bouncing off of Vanessa, my publicist, and she was like, insecure feels incomplete. I was like, you hating on my title. And then after we did the first table reading, Michael and Bernardo was like, you know, when I see these two girls I remember that. Yeah. I just I don't think insecure. I think fierce. I think flawless. I think confident. I think beautiful black women. And I was like, ah, that's the problem respectfully. Like, we don't really get these opportunities to to be flawed. I was like, I don't feel like a strong black woman. I feel like a weak black woman, you know? Right. I remember that. Yeah. If women get to be that on screen, there needs to be those portrayals. Black girl magic. Right. And it's like, no. We're we're human. Yep. And Black girl tragic.
