People give themselves permission to dress as cool as they think that they are. You'll notice this as people get richer or gain more status. They lean more into the style they've always wanted to have. They finally pop their collars, start wearing their hats backwards, deck out their wrists with vague little yarn bracelets, and experiment with dyed hair. A lot of this style you could achieve without the money. They just didn't think that they were cool enough before the money. And fair enough, there is some truth to that. Some styles are earned. There's a reason why no random person is walking around with a bunch of military medals around their neck. It looks weird. It looks weird if you're wearing something you didn't earn socially, but I'd argue that that sort of context is pretty narrow. Dying your hair or popping your collar is not stolen valor. It's just a bold move. But half the good things that happen to us start like this, pretending we're a little bit cooler than we think we are.
