Creator reframes fear of cringe from @var.aunevik

The creator reframes the popular idea that "the fear of being cringe holds you back," arguing instead that the real obstacle is the fear of being sincere and standing behind one's work. She uses her Norwegian cultural background and her experience building a skincare brand to illustrate how this fear of being perceived as arrogant prevents creators from owning their accomplishments, and concludes by advocating for more sincerity.

Transcript excerpt

The fear of being cringe is holding you back is being thrown around a lot right now and there is a truth to it best I'm never fully related to that framing because I'm not actually scared of being cringe. I'm norwegian and we have this thing called it basically goes don't think you're anything special And I didn't realize how much that shaped me until I started sharing my work online. Because the fear is an embarrassment, but rather being perceived as arrogant or as a try hard. And that runs deeper than cringe ever will. When you post your work, people assume you think it's great. And that's very uncomfortable. For a long tier, I thought that feeling was humility, but it's no. It's something more corrosive because it doesn't stop you from creating. It just stops you from standing behind the things that you make. So you start hedging and you call it a small project or start criticizing it before anyone else rank. You become embarrassed by your own sincerity. When I started building the skincare rank, Svaled, with my mom, I couldn't hide behind that anymore. We had to say, this is good and stand in that. And it made me realize that work that has your full name on it carries a weight
