Analyzing a cultural trend shift from @mirandadoesbrands

The creator analyzes the cultural trend of manicures becoming a 'low status' symbol by introducing the concept of 'countersignalling.' She uses a viral influencer video, a Marc Jacobs runway show, and a Substack article as evidence to argue that high-status individuals are opting for bare nails to differentiate themselves.

Transcript excerpt

Getting your nails done becoming low status, the influencer Valeria Lipovetsky posted this video which went viral where she said she's no longer getting her nails done. And this prompted an outpouring from other successful women saying the same thing. Their time is too valuable to waste hours going to the salon every three weeks. This is textbook countersignalling. When the status symbol becomes common, the people at the top opt out to show they don't need it. The same thing happened with designer logos and using fake tan, and now it's happening with manicures. Marc Jacobs just sent every model down the runway with bare nails, supposedly prompting a new manicure trend, and Kathy Kruger wrote this viral substack about the difference between influencer codes and fashion people codes. Influencers never miss their nail appointment. Fashion people just keep them short and bare. The premise is that bare nails actually signal status because they're harder to pull off. We all know a gel nail can hide a multitude of sins. So now the bigger flex is becoming simply not needing one.
