Transcript excerpt

This Nike ad is causing pure chaos in the running world. The Internet is up in flames best bashing Nike. And it led to Nike taking the side down. People are complaining that it's not inclusive and it alienates walkers. Now the ad isn't great, but not for the reason people are complaining. So you first need to know the context of the ad. The sign is at the Boston marathon, one of the hardest marathons to qualify for. It is for the elite of elite runners. It's simply not a race for walkers. There's just no debate with that. The objective by Nike was to celebrate this, to push ambitious high performance messaging, which I totally agree with for Boston. Would this messaging work at your local five k Turkey tribe? No. It wouldn't. But that's the point. It's for the Boston marathon. Now the ad could probably have better copy for the goal they had in mind. But at the end of the day, the messaging of this ad should not be controversial. And honestly, I would respect Nike much more if they brought the sign back today with even more hardcore messaging. Give me something like runners welcome, walkers bad.
