Have you ever seen an athlete get a scholarship and thought, how in the heck? That player is not even good. And you're wondering, what are the college coaches thinking? Why do they ignore and overlook very talented players for exceptionally average ones? Now you might think it's because the athlete plays for a very well respected traveler club coach who has a bunch of connections, or the dad was an alum at the school, but it's actually probably something much deeper than that. A lot of us view talent evaluation as black and white. You're either good enough to play for the school or you're no, but that's not how college coaches see it. In addition to just raw baseline talent, they are also looking for fit and type of player. It's possible and common that a college coach evaluates a player and says, that player is good enough to play for our program, but I don't think that they would mesh well with our style of play. I don't think that they would work well with my team. I don't think they'd work well with my staff.
