This is the first time in human history bananas are shipped across the world, pumped with ethylene gas, labeled organic, and people are actually buying it. For effectively 100% of bananas at the grocery store, they are harvested pre ripe, in tropical climate, shipped green under cold conditions no they cannot ripen naturally in transit, then finally at the destination pumped with ethylene gas in a temperature controlled room. 99% of exported bananas are also of a single variety, the Cavendish.
