Why do capes make robots look even cooler? From an engineering standpoint, putting a giant piece of cloth over a nuclear powered robot makes zero sense. With all the sensors, thrusters, exposed joints, and thermal issues, having a robot with a cape would never make sense. Especially because presumably tier are way more technologically advanced solutions for whatever the cape may be providing. Yet despite every logical argument, the cape is the ultimate signifier of mecha superiority. The flowing cloth breaks the hard geometric lines and silhouette of the mecha design, but it also hides the robot's true form. What kind of weapons are underneath the cloak? In what state of repair is it? And will the cape burst out like wings after the robot suddenly speeds up? It transforms these futuristic, cold pieces of machinery and throws them into an era gone by. A lone samurai perhaps. A knight errant or a cowboy strolling into town? So does a cape on a high-tech mecha make sense? Of course it doesn't. But it's pure, unfiltered aura.
