Long, low shelving or cabinetry immediately adds contrast and a horizon line. I think the trick here is to go really wide like built in wall to wall if you you can, this will widen the perception of the room. It has architecture and dimension almost like three d wainscoting. It's the perfect thing to hang art over, a place for a lamp, or a record player, the easiest way to create a vignette or focal point in a room. Also, just super practical for storage and display purposes, this seems like one of those things in design that almost always works.
